Assort Health Expands Direct EHR Workflow Automation for Practices Using NextGen® Enterprise EHR

Assort’s AI agents can complete supported scheduling and patient-access actions through direct API connections.
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 17, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Assort Health today announced expanded capabilities for its integration used by practices running NextGen® Enterprise EHR. Assort’s AI agents can complete supported patient-access actions directly in the EHR, including reading available appointment slots and creating, canceling, or rescheduling appointments, based on each organization’s configuration.
Assort uses the Platinum API Tier available through NextGen Healthcare’s API Vendor Program. The tier supports read and write transactions across designated data categories, including appointment-slot and appointment-workflow transactions.
For specialty practices, that means an AI agent can carry a patient request from conversation through execution inside NextGen Enterprise. The agent can identify the right provider and appointment type, apply practice-specific scheduling rules, complete the appointment action, and write structured information back using the organization’s existing conventions.
For example, when a patient explains why they need to cancel or reschedule, the agent can map that explanation to the practice’s existing cancellation-reason taxonomy. This preserves the information staff use for downstream workflows and reporting. Beyond scheduling, the integration supports workflows involving referrals, patient cases, clinical notes, chart alerts, diagnoses, procedures, and payment workflows. That means, rather than collecting information and handing the work back to staff, Assort can complete the appropriate action within the system of record.
“Assort deploys AI agents broadly across specialty practices on NextGen Enterprise, and we have now handled more than 650,000 patient interactions across those organizations,” said Jon Wang, Founder and Co-CEO of Assort Health. “That scale taught us that answering the phone is only the beginning. Platinum API access lets us go much further: the agent can carry the work through, from understanding what a patient needs to completing the right action inside the EHR.”
First State Orthopaedics was among the first Assort customers to launch a direct integration with NextGen Enterprise. The initial deployment focused on the practice’s core inbound scheduling workflows and moved from integration to live use quickly. Since launch, First State has seen strong overall performance from the agent, demonstrating how direct EHR connectivity can support patient access within the workflows a practice already uses.
“We were one of the first practices to implement Assort’s direct integration with NextGen, and the integration came together quickly and efficiently,” said Kevin Lee, Chief Operating Officer, First State Orthopaedics. “Since launch, the inbound agent has delivered strong performance while working within the scheduling workflows our team already uses. That combination of fast implementation and reliable day-to-day performance has made Assort a valuable partner for First State.”
“NextGen Enterprise is where our customers manage the operational details that keep a patient’s care moving,” said Jeffery Liu, Founder and Co-CEO of Assort Health. “Giving our agents direct access to those workflows means they can keep the patient record current, complete the next step, and preserve context across interactions. That creates more continuity for patients and fewer handoffs for staff.”
