Sentinel Water Solutions (Sentinel) and Perkasie Regional Authority are celebrating one year of successful operation of the Authority’s temporary granular activated carbon (GAC) treatment system, which has now treated more than 200 million gallons of drinking water while the Authority advances construction of its permanent PFAS treatment facilities.

Temporary GAC Treatment System
The temporary system was deployed in 2025 as an interim solution that allowed the Authority to begin PFAS treatment a year ahead of the completion of its first permanent facility. Sentinel provided four DESOTEC Mobicon vessels pre-loaded with approximately 10,000 pounds of NSF-certified GAC each, along with an automated booster pump skid and pressure-control improvements to integrate the rental equipment with the Authority’s existing infrastructure.
Perkasie elected to move forward with temporary treatment in parallel with the larger capital project, rather than waiting for construction of the permanent plant to be completed. The approach allowed the Authority to pull its PFAS compliance schedule forward, providing treatment to customers while permanent improvements were still being designed and constructed. The original project was specifically developed around this parallel approach to accelerate compliance and safe water delivery.
After a full year of operation and more than 200 million gallons treated, the project is also demonstrating how temporary treatment can be incorporated into a utility’s long-term treatment strategy rather than viewed as a disposable interim investment.
The GAC currently operating in the rental system is planned to become the foundation of Perkasie’s GAC reactivation pool. As carbon is removed from service, it can be reactivated for future use, creating an inventory of Authority-owned reactivated GAC that can ultimately be deployed in the permanent PFAS treatment facility. The strategy allows Perkasie to carry value from the temporary system forward into its permanent treatment program while reducing reliance on virgin carbon and supporting a more sustainable lifecycle approach to PFAS treatment.

The approach builds on Sentinel’s partnership with DESOTEC to provide NSF-certified GAC reactivation and carbon inventory management. The original installation was designed from the outset with future reactivation in mind.
For utilities facing similar PFAS compliance schedules, the Perkasie project demonstrates an alternative to waiting for a permanent capital project to move through design, permitting and construction. Rapidly deployable rental treatment can provide an interim path to compliance, while thoughtful media planning can ensure that investments made during the temporary treatment period continue to provide value after the permanent facility comes online.
