Xishun Tan Receives Gold A’ Design Award for Myriad Circles, a Culturally Anchored Residential Interior in Chengdu
COMO, CO, ITALY, September 4, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — The A’ Design Award has announced Myriad Circles, a residential housing interior designed by Xishun Tan, as a Gold winner in the Interior Space and Exhibition Design category. The A’ Design Award is one of the world’s most prestigious recognitions in the field of interior design, and the Gold distinction acknowledges work that demonstrates considerable innovation and meaningful impact. Myriad Circles draws upon the structural heritage of Linpan architecture in Western Sichuan, China, translating traditional Chuandou timber systems into a contemporary residential narrative. This recognition positions the project among a respected group of designs evaluated through a rigorous and impartial process. The honor highlights the careful research and craftsmanship that shaped the residence.
The recognition holds relevance for the interior design industry by offering a considered model for translating vernacular building traditions into modern urban living. Myriad Circles responds to a growing interest in culturally grounded interiors that move beyond surface-level aesthetic reference toward systemic interpretation. The project demonstrates how heritage carpentry principles can address contemporary spatial needs while supporting individual expression. For practitioners and clients alike, the design illustrates the practical value of combining ethnographic study, material prototyping, and digital fabrication. It also presents a framework for fostering a sense of belonging within dense city environments.
Myriad Circles reinterprets the region’s traditional Chuandou interlocking timber techniques through custom American Walnut joinery, forming a sculptural framework that hosts the client’s Retro-Futurist collection. The design merges the precision of heritage carpentry with the playful spirit of the digital age, balancing historical weight against pop-culture vibrancy through careful curation. To mimic the lightweight aesthetic of traditional Chuandou cantilevers while supporting heavy die-cast models, a concealed steel skeleton was embedded within the walnut joinery. The space synthesizes walnut with stainless steel and glass, allowing the ancient architectural form to be reborn in a contemporary context. A central permanent-temporary framework organizes life through a gradient of spaces from public to private.
The Gold A’ Design Award recognition offers Xishun Tan a foundation for further exploration of vernacular translation in interior practice. The methodology developed for Myriad Circles, which decodes the social scaffold of Linpan settlements, may inform future projects that seek cultural depth alongside functional rigor. The recognition serves as encouragement for continued research into material science and heritage interpretation. It supports an ongoing commitment to thoughtful, contextually rooted design.
