The retired Chief Master Sergeant served 23 years across three continents. At 98, he runs his days the way he always has.
SAN ANTONIO, TX, UNITED STATES, August 10, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — The United States Air Force became its own branch of the military in 1947. Jim Breedlove was already old enough to enlist.
Today, at 98, he lives at Changing Seasons Senior Living Community, a veteran-friendly senior living community in San Antonio, and he carries a distinction few veterans anywhere can claim: he is older than the Air Force itself. He served it for 23 years.
For the final nine of those years, he held the rank of Chief Master Sergeant, the highest rank an enlisted airman can hold. Most airmen never wear it. Jim wore it for nearly a decade.
The rank came with the miles. His career posted him across three continents: England, Alaska, Libya. His favorites were England and Alaska, and the landscapes and cultures he found in both never left him. A career like that would fill most biographies. For Jim, it was the first chapter.
He and his wife raised four daughters together. They were married until 1996, when she passed away. That was almost 30 years ago.
The family she left behind kept growing. Four daughters became several grandchildren, and now a great-grandchild, the newest arrival. Jim finds his joy in watching the generations stay close, and visits bring warmth to his days.
His faith has been the constant. A committed Christian, Jim has leaned on his relationship with God for strength, comfort, and guidance through all of it. At Changing Seasons, that faith has a home in Bible Study, where he digs into scripture and fellowship alongside his peers.
His days run on habits he has kept for decades.
He watches his diet, as he always has, going easy on sugar and keeping his nutrition pointed at the long term. He exercises several times a week, walker and all. He reads the Daily Chronicle to stay sharp on the news, which keeps him supplied with conversation around the community. And he shows up: gatherings, discussions, community events.
The Air Force built the discipline. The discipline built the routine. The routine built a life the rest of the community learns from.
